Still Think It's All About Your Gear?

For those of you who purchased and read my ebook, Guerrilla Glamour, you're aware I invested more than a few pages writing about the importance of gear. I didn't write about expensive gear being important to capturing great glam photos -- the book's called, Guerrilla Glamour after all -- I wrote about using the right gear for the job. (With tips, ideas, and suggestions for using that "right" gear.)

Often enough, the right gear has little to do with how much you're willing or able to spend. As I mentioned in the ebook, "You can have the best gear that money can buy and still shoot photos that suck." (That really sucks, doesn't it?)

To further underscore the point, here's a video I came across (thanks to the good guys at FadedandBlurred.com) that shows what can be accomplished with an iPhone. The photographer in the video purposely set out to shoot a fashion/beauty set with, what he calls, the worst camera you can use.

I'm not suggesting all of you chuck your dSLRs in favor of shooting pretty girls with cell phones. I'm just saying it ain't just about the gear... capturing great images, that is.

Hope you enjoy the video.

From what I've read about this, it was shot in a studio, using studio lights...

Photography is mostly about light, so by using studio lights, you'd expect even a cell phone to do pretty well.

I'd think a cell phone with $2,500 worth of lights will produce better shots than a $2,500 camera with $300 worth of lights (approx cost of iphone... don't know, don't have one.)

If you published the results of the above, in a magazine (which is where most fashion shoots go...) it would be a lot different than in a web video.

But the concept, that it's the vision behind the shot that counts most, is valid.

Here's a good test for why you should have a kit that at least appears to be professional that anyone can try.

1. Hire a model for a shoot, tell it's in a room at a swanky hotel in your area.

2. Book room in said hotel and wait for model.

3. When she arrives pull out your iPhone and tell her you're ready to go to work.

4. Make sure a friend is videoing her reaction. We want to see ;)

@John:

2nd to last paragraph in my post that we're commenting on: "I'm not suggesting all of you chuck your dSLRs in favor of shooting pretty girls with cell phones. I'm just saying it ain't just about the gear... capturing great images, that is." :-)

Great Video. And it is not just about the lights either folks. Its how to put it all together to get the shot. I think they call that photography.

Keep 'em coming Jimmy..
